The Well 井

The well describes a shared resource whose value depends on access, maintenance, and trustworthy stewardship. Jing asks you to look beneath changing surface arrangements to the infrastructure that repeatedly supports people: knowledge, water, public systems, institutional memory, community trust, or other common capacities. A good source can remain unused because the access mechanism is broken; a poor source can be mistaken for adequacy because everyone has adapted to low expectations. The reading therefore separates source quality from delivery quality. Clean the well, repair the rope and vessel, distribute access fairly, and keep the source protected enough to remain viable. Tradition is useful only if it still gets water to people. At the highest point the well is open and dependable, but even then stewardship remains necessary so shared benefit does not become careless depletion.
